While the White House will recover from what historians might call a “hiring snafu,” a similar hiring mistake could have negative repercussions if it had occurred in a small, medium, or large business.

1. Create and Use a Job Description.

Job descriptions help you define what you need, so you can objectively determine if the person has the skills necessary to complete the role.

Some organizations already have their job roles defined, including a description of tasks, experience necessary, and skills that will help a person achieve success in the role. Don’t feel compelled to give the job to the first friend who walks through the door.

3. Have a Consistent Hiring Process, and Put All of Your Applicants through the Same Process.

It’s important to make your hiring process fair. Everyone should have to go through the same steps so that you have enough information to make a hiring decision. It’s also helpful to know about their personality: Do they like to develop relationships? Do they enjoy problem solving? Are they adaptable? Do they want the company to succeed, and are they a team player?
